History

Palena Netball Club was founded in 1965 and has steadily increased in size and professionalism. It was formed as a result of several players from the Hobart Teacher’s College team, forming a new club.

Our club logo features a netball with seven radiating stars. Our original colours were yellow and brown

‘Palena’ is an aboriginal word meaning ‘seven stars’ or ‘shining stars’. The club set the trend in administration by becoming the first southern netball club to gain sporsorship for our players.

In 1996 our sponsors ‘DJ Mitsubishi’ encouraged us to accept a new package that included changing our club colours, uniform and name change to DJ Palena Netball Club. Our new colours are black, royal blue, red and white. Other sponsors of the club recent years have included BP Fuel and Coca Cola. Recently our club has turned to affiliate sponsors, welcoming Mures Lower Deck on board in 2011.

Palena Netball Club has had many state representatives and two reserve Australian representatives in Janine Blake and Maureen Wilding. One of our current coaches and life members, Shane Fish has also represented Australia in the Australian Men’s Netball Association.

Palena Netball Club currently has approximately 180 members and 17 life members.
